africa today. a massive public memorial for antiapartheid leader nelson mandela. this is a live look at johannesburg where tens of thousands of people are joined by dignitaries from all over the world. four u.s. presidents are there including president barack obama. kpix 5's cate caugurian is in the newsroom and in his speech president obama urged the world to continue mandela's legacy. >> reporter: yes he did. it's been a very heartfelt but joyous celebration so far. and when president obama spoke, he called nelson mandela the last great liberator of the 20s century. now -- 20th century. the crowd of 90,000 showed up in johannesburg to bid farewell to the former president. the weather played no role in the atmosphere of the today's ceremony. the group was singing and dancing so songs from the struggle. the crowd included 91 heads of state including president obama and three former u.s.

presidents. mr. obama delivered his eulogy emphasizing that mandela's jury know continues as -- journey continues as does the struggle for equality. >> for around the world today, we still see children suffering from hunger and disease. we still see rundown schools. we still see young people without prospects for the future. around the world today, men and women are still in prison for their political beliefs. and are still persecuted for what they lock like and how they worship and who they love. that is happening. >> reporter: the four hour ceremony is being held in the national soccer stadium. it's where mandela made his first major speech after being released from prison in 1990. he passed away last week at 95. before the world leaders began their speeches, it was the south africans who gave the most heartfelt tributes saying that mandela gave up his freedom for theirs. reporting live in the newsroom, cate caugurian, kpix 5. >> his body will lie in state

until friday and he will be given an official funeral on sunday in his hometown village. a memorial service for mandela is also planned in washington, d.c. where the oakland pacific boys choir academy will be part of the ceremony. the kids have traveled the world but it was a trip to south africa in 2009 that ninth grader brendan singer says had the greatest impact. they traveled to nelson mandela's home. >> being in his house, seeing where he stood. like where he got all his great ideas. >> the event at the national cathedral is set for thursday. 6:03 now. a look at traffic and see what's cooking in traffic. liz? >> okay. thank you guys. yeah and an outside we go and i'm taking you outside to the dublin interchange. in the busy commuter area westbound 580 by hacienda right before the interchange and you can see the traffic backup right there. they're working to clean it right now. but in the meantime, we're seeing the slowdowns now

beginning through the altamonte pass. the red sensors not the one we like to see at this point of the morning. 23 minutes right foul between the turbines and 680 and the dublin interchange. also reports of black ice. this is where it is. on northbound 280 a spinout near black mountain and nearby on the bridge where we've seen black ice forming over the last few days, how long? the past week or soment black ice form during the morning commute. heads-up be extra carful during the stretch in the county. and here's a live look in the bay bridge where the metering lights were turned on a few minutes ago. in the cash and fast track lanes it is backed up towards the west grand overcrossings about a ten minute wait onto the by bridge. and once again, b.a.r.t. may have some delays from the san francisco area out towards the east bay. it was an earlier power issue near the b.a.r.t. yard and once again service was restored but these are just minor delays right now while they work to get things back on

schedule. that's your latest traffic. for more on the forecast, here's lawrence. yeah. i would love to see this weather start to warm up soon, very dangerous weather for some folks, in fact out the door right now a lot of 20s again. crop damage in some spots and i'm sure especially in the north bay and maybe even in the east bay as well. down to 23 degrees in santa rosa. 27 in napa. 29 in san jose. and 29 degrees in livermore. so the freeze warnings of course are up again this morning. i think this will be the last day of the widespread freeze warnings. i think by tomorrow most of the froze warnings will be confined to the valley. but it will still be a chilly start to the day tomorrow as well. temperatures by the afternoon though are going to begin to change. highs beginning to warm up mainly in the 50s maybe even some mid 50s into san jose. looks like this colds snap is starting the wind down but still dangerous cold weather conditions out there this morning. kiet do is live out there right now. >> reporter: we're getting reports of two more people who have died in santa clara county this week. this is in addition to the four

people who died last week. right now we're live in sunny vail at the largest of the -- sunnyvale at the largest of the overnight shelters. they are letting people stay here throughout the day. the folks who were woken up at 5:00 a.m. this morning, but they will billion allowed to stay here throughout the day. where it is warm. now these two new deaths have been frustrating especially for workers who have been trying to encourage people to come to the shelters. where the total of 275 beds. the cold snap hit and killed four people and then they increased the number of beds temporarily to 375. after a week of sub freezing temperatures, word is finally getting out open the street and -- on the street and more people are coming in from the cold. >> it scares me because i don't want to die. not that way. >> just inviting people and reminding them they don't have to go. they'll make an announcement due to the weather, it's freezing outside. and -- there's no need to just

rush out. >> reporter: so temporarily at least the beds -- the number of beds have been increased. it looks like things are going to go back to normal tonight. the number of beds will go down from 375 to 275. even though we still have a couple more days of cold weather ahead. we're live in sunnyvale. kilt doe -- kiet do, kpix 5. happening today a protest. activists have been very vocal since 13-year-old andy lopez was shot back in october by erick gelhaus. he mistook his toy gun for an assault rifle. investigators say the teen didn't comply with orders to drop the weapon. today's march is set to begin at 4:00 at santa rosa city hall. and searchers fear time is now running out for six family members missing in northern nevada. the pershing county sheriff's department says james glanton and christina macintee took four children to play in the snow near love lock on sunday. they haven't been seen since.

searchers have been scouring area which has been snowy and bitter cold this past week. >> it's getting more and more urgent as we -- as we go. but we're running out of time. and time is not on our side. >> the children range in age from 3 to 10 yores old. -- years old. fire at a san francisco recycling plant has been burning for nearly ten hours now. it started at about 8:30 last night at the ecology plant off highway 101 near the bay train cal shore she is. it caused -- station. it caused smoky conditions that continued on after the fire began. firefighters tell us that made attacking the flames very difficult. >> the largest challenge we have of this fire right now is because of the being inside this large warehouse is the smoke. we're having to rotate crews in and out. and go through a lot of bottles. why they're in there working around the rubbish pile. >> the fire was contained to

still blocking two lanes. we're not seeing any major delays though on the sensors because it's still so early. also reporting of icy roads on the duran bridge. we've been seeing that the past several days with all the cold weather outside. let's get a check of the forecast coming up. in the meantime here's a live look at things heating up at the bay bridge. one of the few warmer spots on the roads. because you can see all the traffic there just baiting trying to get through the pay gate. and it looks like it's backed up towards the 880 overcrossing and probably about 15 minutes right now to get you on to the bridge. and if you're heading to the san mateo bridge all the taillights right here on the right side of the screen. this is the commute direction heading out over the high-rise. 14 minutes between 880 and 101. a nice smooth commute. but from the travel times you can see that one of the worst spots is definitely that ride through the altamonte pass. again nothing unusual for this time of the morning. it's here in highway 4 that usually compete for the high spot. the nimitz and north shore freeway still in the clear. heading dun into emily vail. if you have questions about the

morning commute, tune to our radio partners and we share the information with them. kcbs radio and you can find them at 7:40 a.m. or 106.9 fm. that's your latest kcbs traffic. more on the forecast here's lawrence. i think that's big question. everyone's asking when are we going to see the cold snap end and i think probably today the last of the worst of it as we've got that cold air overhead. you've got the offshore winds and the air is very dry. dew points now in the into the teens and the low 20s and we've seen the temperatures really falling all around the bay area. numbers down to 23 degrees right now in santa rosa. 27 in the napa valley and even 29 in san jose. 29 in livermore and 25-degrees in concord and fairfield. so we start with the cold temperatures again. but by the afternoon, we'll begin to notice some changes. plenty of sunshine all day long. the temperatures though will be a little warmer today. that means high pressure starting to build in overhead. enough so we move well into the 60s by tend of the weekend and

maybe some 70s next week. you can see it shoving the arctic air mass further to the east but not before another cold morning tomorrow. everywhere else should be okay. 50s gnat valley central -- in the central valley for today. 44 degrees in lake tahoe. temperatures today will be warmer especially in the south bay. about 56-degrees in san jose and 55 in mountain view and about 53-degrees in san mateo. east bay all in the 40s yesterday should be up in the 40s to end the low 50s this afternoon. and some milder weather inside the bay. 53 degrees in san francisco and 53 in oakland. next couple of days we are going to slowly start to warm things up a bit. the weekend looking very nice as high pressure builds overhead. maybe even some low # 0s into next week. your sun vise time. 7:14 today. sunset 4:51. but yeah i'm sure a lot of folks are getting tired of waking up early in the morning and chiseling away all the ice. i mean it's not michigan. not every morning. >> i have maybe a half mile

and 280 not a super heavily traveled this time and we're not seeing any huge backups because of it. but again they issued a traffic alert because they think the lanes are going to be blocked for the next half hour. live look outside at the cold commute outside. the bay bridge. and it is backing up towards the foot of the maze now. probably 15 minutes or so to get you onto the pan. the meet -- span. metering lights were turned on at 6:00 this morning. that is your latest kcbs traffic. your forecast here's lawrence. very cold. freezing temperatures again outside. if you're just headed out the door grab a jacket and maybe some grooves you'll need it. temperatures diving once down into the 20s in smooch the interior valleys. 23-degrees in santa rosa right now. that's the cold spot. 29-degrees in livermore and 29 even in san jose. 40 though into san francisco. now the freeze warnings are up again until 9:00 in the morning. then it looks like the sunshine and some warmer temperatures arnold the bray area today. in fact, by the afternoon today, moving up into the mid 50s in some spots about 56

degrees in san jose. and 54 degrees in oakland. when will the cold snap end? we'll have the answer in a couple of minutes guys. back to you. on the same theme now. thanks launch. kpix 5's kit lawrence is live in -- kiet do is live in sunnyvale this morning. the dangerous cold spell has now killed six people. >> reporter: yeah, two this week and four last week. we're live here at sunnyvale. this is the largest overnight shelter here in the south bay. the folks were woken up at 5:00 this morning. typically they are pushed out after breakfast. but because of the frigid weather, they will be allowed to stay all day but only for today. now they said that they were above capacity with 200 plus people last night. they did not turn anyone away. the number of deaths blamed on the cold weather is now up to six and now on the night that many of the homeless died. there were actually empty beds at the shelter. workers have been visiting them. the number of beds has been

increased temporarily from 275 to 375. they're now seeing more elderly and women with kids. in fact they've had seven kids here last night. felix hernandez believes the extra beds and hours saved lives. >> i was surprised that tea call aim this -- that they all came of this nature which this fast. but i believe the cold ran them in here. that's how cold it was. >> reporter: all right, the shelter manager tells us that the hours will go back to normal starting tomorrow. that means after breakfast, the people will be pushed back out onto the streets. but their capacity will stay the same. in fact because it's so cold, they do not turn anybody away and they just sleep on the ground. we're live in sunnyvale, kiet do, kpix 5. >> our temperatures have been brutal on the begannens here in the bay area. sheets are blanketing lawns all across the concord neighborhood to cover and protect plants from damage overnight. experts say don't touch it if your plant already fell victim to the cold. >> we need to leave the burnt

tips on the tips -- tips on the plants. they can attack everything that's already been damaged. >> experts also say if your plant has frost damage, it doesn't mean it's a total loss. roots and the interior of the plant are still alive and it will survive just cover it up. police say when a thief busted into a parked car, he didn't just steal gifts. he stole presents intended for kids at oakland's children's hospital. kpix 5's mark kelly is in vallejo after the target. -- at the target. >> reporter: very disappointing myship. seems like something straight out of the grinch movie. today investigators are going to be back on the scene here at this target store in benicia. they want to take a closer look at that surveillance video. but the video they've already seen is enough to put a damper on anyone's christmas joy. benicia police say this surveillance video caught a man breaking into not one but three

different cars early monday morning. >> in one of the videos you can actually see him putting pressure on the -- pry tools and then leaning into the window. and snapping the window. >> reporter: one of those cars belonged to marcie moriarty. >> i was just crushed and shock asked denver stated. >> reporter: moriarty had her car packed with difficults to donate to families at oakland's children's hospital. she regrets packing the gifts in the car the night before but she believed her neighborhood was safe. >> they would have had to open the door and come in. there was in way they could have just reached in and grabbed them. >> reporter: man then used a stolen gift card at this vallejo target. earning this suspect the enema mouse title only -- infamous title of grinch. there were $1,500 worth of toys and gifts in the back of that car. michelle? >> well, mark there's something positive that came out of this.

kcbs radio financial reporter jason brooks joins us on this tuesday. >> reporter: good morning. mary bara will reportedly be the next ceo at general motors replacing dan ackerson as you mentioned she will be the first woman to lead a major u.s. automaker. graduated from stanford's business school in 1990. she currently leads product development and global production for general motors and will take over. this coming as the federal government just sold its final shares of the company. bailed out gm for $9.5 million -- 49 .$5 billion five years ago and it turns out taxpayers will lose $10 billion on that deal. lesson number one in retail. don't disparage the customers. lululemon's founder and chairman chip wilson found that out when he said that some women's bodies aren't meant for a lululemon's yoga pants, that upset a lot of people out there. and his apology was half hearted at best. so he is stepping down as

chairman and investors and customers like that news. the lululemon shares right now are up by 1%. market had some modst gains yesterday. let's see how it's doing this morning. another pretty quiet day on the economic front. dow dropping 22 points, nasdaq is down by 4. s and p is moving lower by 12 points. >> thank you. 6:45 now. busy day in traffic. liz? >> okay thank you guys, and we do have a new injury crash now coming in. this time in fremont. northbound 880 by that thornton avenue exit. one lane is blocked and we're seeing a little bit of slowing but mostly in the southbound direction is wait looks like, the -- what it looks like, the accident though is northbound. if you're continuing northbound for the morning drive, this is oakland and starting to get more crowded in lanes but so far no delays. between 238 and the mcarthur maze. and hey much better news now in hillsborough. san mateo county. we have reports of black ice, and a multicar accident. they issued a traffic alert

earlier because a couple of lanes were blocked. they were able to reopen all lanes within the last you the minutes. some delays in the area. and there may still be some black ice. across the duran bridge it was reported and again near the black mountain road exit. be extra careful on 280 this morning. the bay bridge toll plaza. and meters lights have been on now for about 45 minutes. that's your latest kcbs traffic. for a couple for months until summer? oh boy it's been a while huh but that's going to change soon. although the cold air sitting overhead. high pressure now building up above and that is going to set the stage for some warmer temperatures ahead. still very cold this morning. 23 degrees in santa rosa right now. 27 in napa. 25 in concord and 29 in san jose. and also in livermore. by the afternoon, though, we'll see more sunshine and a slightly warmer temperature forecast. and in fact, looks like over the next few days high pressure

going to be building in. and slow warming into the weekend. by latter part of the weekend moving well into the 60s and maybe even some 70s next week. well you can see the jeez play being put on right now. high pressure shoving the arctic air mass further to the east. i think another cold night tonight but not as colds into tomorrow morning. so as we head around san francisco, if you're headed out on the flight no delays expected there. moving across the country though, looks like it is going to be very very cold in spots. especially into chicago. partly cloudy skies. about 22 degrees, 36 in denver. and 49 in houston. 34 degrees and snow in new york. and yeah, folks if you're headed in that direction, a big snowstorm is sliding on through that and philadelphia you can see the snow coming down there. they're going to see a whole lot of snow in the next 24 hours here and very very white stuff coming their way. temperatures for us though, plenty of 50s outside by the afternoon. in fact maybe even mid 50s next couple of days and warm up the temperatures and maybe even getting into the upper 60s by the weekend.
